What Is a Tip?
A tip, or gratuity, is an extra sum of money given to a service worker — a server, bartender, taxi driver, or hairdresser, among others — as a way of acknowledging good service. Tipping is voluntary almost everywhere, yet its role varies enormously from one country to the next. In much of East Asia, including Japan, tipping isn’t expected and can even come across as awkward or, in some contexts, mildly offensive. In the United States and Canada, by contrast, tipping is the norm: many service workers are paid a lower base wage precisely because tips are expected to make up the difference, which is why gratuity there often feels less optional than it technically is.
